Poviglio, in provincia di Reggio, a sud del Pò e a pochi Km da esso è soprattutto conosciuta per le Terramare, un insediamento dell’età del bronzo (1650-1150 a.C.). Sviluppatesi tra il Nord dell’Emilia e il sud della Lombardia e del Veneto, vedono qui a Poviglio una testimonianza rilevante in quelle chiamate di Santa Rosa, ben visibili dall’alto e visitabili durante l’estate. In atto il progetto di realizzazione di un parco archeologico. Alcuni reperti con figure di cani e cavalli sono visibili presso il Museo Archeologico di Poviglio. La leggenda ci racconta che due orfani in epoca romana fondarono la città, ma in realtà il primo insediamento di Poviglio risalirebbe al IX- X sec. d.C.
Purtroppo la struttura poligonale stellata della piazzaforte presente in città è ormai totalmente scomparsa. Il suo castello, costruito nel rinascimento, fu abitato da diversi signorie quali i Dal Verme, i Gonzaga, i Farnese e infine dai Borboni.
Edifici da vedere sono la Chiesa di Santo Stefano, risalente al XII secolo, che ospita un quadro del pittore Carlo Zatti e la torre campanaria, realizzata nel XIV secolo.

Unfortunately, the starry polygonal structure of the fortress in the city has now completely disappeared. Its castle, built in the Renaissance, was inhabited by various lords such as the Dal Verme, the Gonzagas, the Farnese and finally the Bourbons.
Buildings worth seeing are the Church of Santo Stefano, dating back to the 12th century, which houses a painting by the painter Carlo Zatti and the bell tower, built in the 14th century.
