Avigliana è un comune all’interno della città metropolitana di Torino. IL suo nome deriva da Avilius, nome dato dai romani ai coloni del nord Italia.
Era luogo di transito dei commerci tra la Gallia e Roma e qui vi era una dogana per la tassa sulle merci.
La sua origine pare risalga al 595 A.C. Nel 312 A.C. Costantino con le sue truppe attraversò il luogo per andare poi a scontrarsi con Massenzio.
Fu Clefi, il Re dei Longobardi, ad erigere il suo castello.
DA ricordare la Marchesa Adelaide. Fu la capostipite dei Savoia. Lo si deve alla sua volontà la costruzione del Borgo Nuovo, che univa il castello al borgo più antico posto più a valle. Tanti furono gli assedi al castello durante la sua storia. DA ricordare quella dei francesi nel 1536 che con i cannoni oltre a distruggere una parte del castello uccisero tutti coloro che vietano di guardia. Il colpo di grazia al castello fu dato da un altro francese, il generale Catinat, che nel 1690 bombardò il castello lasciando quello che resta visibile oggi. Ma oltre al castello Avigliana custodisce altri luoghi storici e artistici quali il Santuario della madonna dei laghi del 1622 gestita dai salesiani. La chiesa di Santa Maria Maggiore le cui origini risalgono al 772. La bellissima chiesa di San Pietro risalente all’XI secolo, e la chiesa di San Giovanni in Piazza con all’interno numerose opere di Defendente Ferrari.
Numerose sono anche le architetture civili come la Casaforte del Beato Umberto di Savoia del 1300, la torre dell’orologio, la Casa di Porta Ferrata e altri luoghi.
Per gli amanti della natura, Avigliana possiede due laghi che vengono chiamati lago piccolo e lago grande. Ora vi è il parco naturale dei Laghi di Avigliana che ospita diverse specie di uccelli come i Germani Reali e gli aironi.
